Today in grade 1/2, we started with a writing prompt. The students came in and this photo was on the smart board:

Students immediately began writing based off this prompt. During this time we walked around to help any students, we read some students ideas and observed how the teacher interacted with the students who needed help.

After students finish their writing prompt, they bring their work to the teacher and she checks over it. She uses the C.A.P.S method: Capitalization Appearance (finger spacing, etc) Punctuation and Spelling

This way the students always know what she is looking for in their writing. If they have done all those steps, she gives them a sticker for their sticker book!

Big Idea:

  • Stories and other texts can be shared through pictures and words.

Curricular Competency:

  • Communicate using letters and words and applying some conventions of Canadian spelling, grammar and punctuation

UFLI:

Next, the class moved onto their daily UFLI lesson! Today’s lesson was about “-ed” and when we use the different pronunciations of it. For example:

  • -ed = /d/ When the final sound of the root word is voiced
  • -ed = /t/ When the final sound of the root word is unvoiced
  • -ed = /ed/ This sound comes after the letter t or d at the end of the root word.

Reflection: During this lesson, I tried to be as involved as I could, I walked around and helped students out during writing. Although, I found that it was harder to be immersed in the UFLI lesson as the teacher was running the whole lesson. There were a few opportunities for us to check in with students while the students worked at their desks, but when they worked at the carpet the teacher was the one running it which made it harder for us to be involved. We still listened and were engaged in the lesson, I just did not feel as involved as I wish I could have been, it felt more like an observation at that point. Next time I hope to get more involved in the UFLI section of the lesson since I am planning to teach UFLI in my own practicum class.
