Pink Shirt Day

How did pink shirt day start?
Pink Shirt Day started in 2007 in Canada as an anti-bullying initiative. It was started by two high school students in Nova Scotia!
The story: A student at their school was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. Two students decided to take a stand. They bought 50 pink shirts and handed them out to classmates to wear the next day in solidarity. This action ended up spreading the word across the nation and eventually became a global initiative thanks to these two students who decided to stand up for a classmate. Pink Shirt Day now takes place every year on the last Wednesday of February to raise awareness about bullying and encourage positive behaviour.
Pink Shirt Day has evolved to include other initiatives as well such as Random Acts of Kindness Day/week that takes place in February as well. Overall, February is a month of love and kindness although this should not just take place during February, it is a year round intention!

My future plans for Pink Shirt Day:

In my future classroom/practicum class, I would love to make February a whole month dedicated to kindness and spreading positivity and love! Although I strive to make every month a month full of these things, I see myself making February totally kindness/love themed! I would love to bring in picture books every week/day that are geared towards these topics. I also would plan for my class to be involved in helping plan Pink Shirt Day activities for the school as well as Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK) activities. I love the idea of having a RAOK Bingo game that is ongoing throughout the month. If a student completes a RAOK they can check in with the teacher and stamp it off and whoever gets a bingo gets a little prize or ticket.
