First Weekly Reflection – My Experience Using Social Media

with 3 Comments

Personally, I have a bitter-sweet relationship with social media. I have my opinions regarding how different topics may be fabricated or unrealistic when it comes to social media within society and pop culture. Despite this more negative view on social media I also recognize the power social media holds and how that can be beneficial today, especially as a teacher. I believe that using social media and technology in a positive way will essentially bring new aspects into learning as we all navigate the ever-changing ways of social media.

I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I find that it is such a prominent piece in peoples everyday lives and nearly impossible to avoid. I personally would love to boycott social media; however, if I did I know it would be extremely hard to keep in touch with friends and family. The fear of losing connection keeps me from deleting my social media accounts. I feel my mind would be much healthier if I didn’t have a tainted perspective of society and have so many social expectations when it comes to social media and what I should be sharing or not sharing or if I share too often or not enough. There are so many expectations in society when it comes to social media, that I wish didn’t play such a heavy role in our generation.

On the other hand, I run a small business and I heavily rely on social media as a business platform. This is where the love aspect comes from. Being able to so easily share my products through Instagram and Facebook plays such a heavy role in my sales and my brand. Without social media it would be extremely difficult to spread the name of my brand as well as market my products to such a variety of places. Another positive of social media is I love photography. I use my instagram as a way to share my photos with all my friends and family and engaging with them over my photos makes me happy!

These are reasons and my personal experiences that play into my stance on believing social media can be used in positive ways, while also keeping in mind how it can be negative. We just need to gain the knowledge we can to utilize this in our classrooms and in our society in more of a beneficial way.

I second the exact feelings about social media! I too have a love/hate relationship with it and think the reasons why you feel this way is very clear and very legit. I’m starting to see the importance of bringing technology into the classroom as the generation of students we will teach are using so many different platforms. It’s our duty as future educators to be aware of its uses and mis-uses.
