In-situ Experience

We went to Marysville Elementary to a grade 3 classroom where we worked in groups with the students to create stop motion videos! I found that working with our own classmates to create stop motion videos worked more effectively as we were able to collaborate in a more effective way. However, I found that in the grade 3 classroom the students were way more eager to share their ideas and be more creative.

What would be the ideal equipment and timeline for creating stop motion video in the classroom?

Ideal Equipment & Timeline for Stop Motion in The Classroom

For creating stop motion in the classroom I think that having basic equipment such as iPads, lego or some sort of object to represent characters, background options and tripods would be key items to have to create stop motion videos. Although you could always find use for more items to create better lighting, different scenes, etc.

Themes and Topic Ideas:

• Science – Ecosystems, Lifecycles, Water Cycle, etc

Students could represent different lifecycles, ecosystems and water cycles using stop motion animation videos. By showing changes over time, stop motion could be a great tool to showcase just how things can change.

• Language Arts

Students can use stop motion to work through Language Arts assignments because they can express different stories through stop motion. Storytelling can be done in many ways and stop motion is one of them! Students can bring characters and scenes to life, fostering a deeper understanding of plot, character development, and themes in texts.

• Socials/History

History and socials can be represented through stop motion students can make a video showing a historical event. They can also use it for geography and representing different places and how they change over time.

• Math

Students can use stop motion in math class to show patterns and symmetry. They could also showcase their learning and understanding of manipulatives.

• Technology and Innovation

Since stop motion is already integrated into technology, you could expand on that by teaching them how to edit videos, adding sound effects and voice overs.
