The Benefits Of Using Story Vines In The Classroom:
Story vines are a great hands on way to connect Art curriculum components with the English Language Arts curriculum. while I completed this assignment I was personally able to make connections between the book and how I wanted my story vine to look. This project was great because it allowed students to be creative and create unique pieces while still having som structure as to how the end result was expected to look. This activity was also great because it encourages learners to dig deeper into a book they may have read a handful of times before. I also realized this activity is a great way to hit the “retelling the story” aspect from the curriculum as students are needing to retell a story in their own perspective using the different elements they create.
“As outlined by Robin Bright (2021): Story vines…
- Develop students’ understanding of story and sequence
- Introduce students to new vocabulary
- Link visual imagery with reading
- Develop fluency in reading and talking”
If You Give A Mouse A Cookie:
Rationale: I choose this story because it is one of my favourite books from my childhood. I also really enjoy the different elements within this story. I would want to use this book to showcase the concept of sequencing within a story.
Curricular Connections:
- Elements of a story
- Oral Language Strategies
- Reading Strategies
- Recognize the structure and elements of story
- Exchange ideas and perspectives to build shared understanding
- Create stories and other texts to deepen awareness of self, family, and community
- Recognize how different text structures reflect different purposes.

My Story Vine:
For my story vine I wanted to create an item for each sequence of the story. I added a little mouse to start. Then I included a cookie, glass of milk and straw. I then continued to add each item that the mouse would ask for.
- Mouse and cookie
- Milk
- Straw
- Napkin
- Scissors
- Broom
- Bed
- Book/Bedtime story
